CANCELLED: The Future of NATO: How to Adapt to New Realities?

An evolving security environment in Europe and across the globe creates new challenges for the transatlantic alliance. NATO has been publicly called brain dead or obsolete over the past years, but at the same time it welcomed new members, increased the number of domains that it takes part in, and it also significantly boosted its deterrence posture. No wonder that the leaders at the London Summit in 2019 launched a reflection process of NATO’s political dimension, which is spearheaded by the group of ten men and women appointed by Jens Stoltenberg at the end of March. The future of NATO is also the topic of a volume edited by Col. John Andreas Olsen and very recently published by the London-based think tank RUSI. In this book top-level practitioners and experts discussed current threats and challenges that the Alliance is facing and they tried to come up with some answers as well. This event at the IIR will introduce the key ideas of this volume and also offer their critical appraisal, which is inspired by a forthcoming IIR Policy Brief on the same topic.
